From the beginning of creation until now, words have held power and sway. Consider the first word ever spoken by the Creator;

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

The power of those words are in the fact that the light is still going forth. Most in church call this a decree. They are probably right, but I see it as the right of the Creator to speak and His creation obey.

Moving on…

All through the books of the Bible you see the power of words in blessings spoken over children, laws decreed by God, prophets issuing warnings and Jesus commanding unclean spirits to flee.

We see warning after warning of the tongue and how dangerous it is and yet we continue to babble as if it has no application to us personally.

This morning when considering the Proverbs, I thought about Solomon. Who according to scripture was the wisest King to ever live. I pondered the fact that he asked for wisdom rather than charisma. He asked for wisdom rather than words, yet he penned many proverbs that continue to teach and instruct us thousands of years later. So I asked the Lord why that was? What made Solomon so wise? I think the answer is found within the contents  and the context of his own writings.

Proverbs 10:19 (KJV)

In the multitude (H7230: abundance) of words there wanteth (H2308: properly, to be flabby) not sin (H6588: a revolt, rebellion): but he that refraineth (H2820: restrain, refuse, spare)  his lips (H8193/5490:the lip as a natural boundary) is wise (H7919: circumspect, and hence intelligent).

I put some of the Hebrew meanings of the words into the verse to better define the idea the author was getting at.

I wonder at times as I talk and talk and talk some more if I seem more like a court jester to God than a person with whom He can talk to. It is in this consideration and this vain of thought that I end this post with the idea that everything that can be said, has already been said. Maybe it’s past time I shut up. That idea, the last several years has been squashed because you might hurt feelings, you might crush someone’s ego. Please!!!! The most effective word I own in my arsenal, when all else fails, is SHUT UP! My kids know if I resort to this I’m dead serious and they better listen. Maybe it’s time to re-instate this word back into everyday conversation. Stop being so politically, syrupy correct. Blah! I bet you can name 5 people, probably more I’m being nice, that you would love to tell to shut up. I know you think I’m being harsh, but turn on the TV there are literally thousands on there that need to do just that. SHUT UP! Go to church, read a blog, post a comment a million times and after a point it gets to be tedious and non relevant. The scripture says to be more prone to listen than to speak. How many do you know that actually take this advice. Nuff said… It’s time for me personally to SHUT UP!

We go on to read in scripture these words. All you so called dream interpreters; here’s your answer to most of the people’s dreams. You must be wise enough to discern a dream from God and a dream brought on by your motor mouth (as my mom would say and did say often enough)

Ecclesiastes 5:3

For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by the multitude of words.

I do not want to be defined as a fool, nor do I wish to compete with God’s voice. So today with little fanfare and absolutely no applause I gather all the words that I intended to speak and I put them back in the fool’s chest where they belong. I render unto to God alone the calves of my lips.

Hosea 14:2

Take with you no words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.

I will end this with the words of Solomon.

Ecclesiastes 12:13

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
